Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Center Japan
Founded by Swami Vishnudevananda (“Swamiji”), the International Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Center (ISYVC) is a non-profit organization composed of 9 Ashrams and more than 30 Centers around the world. Swamiji named the ISYVC in honor of his teacher, the great Indian Saint and yogi, His Holiness Swami Sivananda, one of the most influential spiritual teachers of the 20th century.
With a vision to share the classical Yoga teachings with the world, Swami Sivananda sent his disciple Swami Vishnudevananda to the west in 1957. Swamiji opened the first Sivananda Yoga Center in Montreal, Canada, in 1959. Thus began Swamiji’s mission to spread the ancient wisdom of Yoga in the west and around the world. An essential part of Swamiji’s mission is the Yoga Teachers Training Course (“TTC”), with over 36,000 Yoga teachers trained to date. Trainings take place throughout the year and around the world.
The Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Center Japan was founded in 2007 as the first and the only official branch of SYVC in Japan. We opened Yoga Center called “Sivananda Tokyo Center” near Yoyogi station in Tokyo, then moved to Koenji in 2011 which was offering various programs until May 2021.
In June 2021, SYVCJ has moved to Yamanashi Prefecture where we have been operating “Shojiko Retreat” since 2018. We are now offering programs ONLINE including morning satsang (meditation, kirtan, lecture), daily asana and pranayama classes, various workshops, and Teacher’s Training Course.
Sivananda Shoji-ko Retreat
On April 8th 2018, Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Center’s first retreat facility in Japan was opened at the lakeside of Shoji-ko, one of the 5 lakes surrounding Mt. Fuji.
